“Probably the best independent bakery in the area, with an emphasis on Greek style desserts. They also have a full assortment of coffee and espresso, and tables inside to sit and enjoy your pastry. Would recommend if you're in the area.”
A Greek bakery that opens at seven.
Walk up to the yellow awning. Push the door. The case is full and the espresso machine is on.
Most mornings on East 55th Street begin somewhere else. They end at our counter. A flat white. A cheese pie. A second flat white. A piece of trileches for the walk back to Park Ave.
The case is laid out the same way every day. Greek desserts on the left: baklava, kataifi, almond cookies, butter cookies. Cakes in the middle: chocolate, fruit tortes, mousse, layer. Sandwiches and salads on the right from eleven onward. Bread comes out warm through the morning.
The room behind the counter is a real café. Tables, music, daylight, quiet enough to read the paper for an hour and not feel rushed.
