The shop

A Greek bakery that opens at seven.

Walk up to the yellow awning. Push the door. The case is full and the espresso machine is on.

Most mornings on East 55th Street begin somewhere else. They end at our counter. A flat white. A cheese pie. A second flat white. A piece of trileches for the walk back to Park Ave.

The case is laid out the same way every day. Greek desserts on the left: baklava, kataifi, almond cookies, butter cookies. Cakes in the middle: chocolate, fruit tortes, mousse, layer. Sandwiches and salads on the right from eleven onward. Bread comes out warm through the morning.

The room behind the counter is a real café. Tables, music, daylight, quiet enough to read the paper for an hour and not feel rushed.

The interior café room at The Bakery Room: long marble counter, displays, café seating in the back
Sit a while

The room behind the case.

Past the counter the floor opens into a quiet café room. Tables, marble, daylight through the front window, music on softly. A regular comes in for a cup of tea and the Banana Walnut Loaf and stays an hour with the paper. Two architects redraw a floor plan over flat whites. A wedding cake gets discussed at the table by the window.

When the weather's warm, the yellow chairs come out front. East 55th Street, Park to Lex, with a coffee. There are not many blocks in Midtown that feel like that.

“A delightful spot to relax in the heart of NYC. Very nice background music as well.”

Probably the best independent bakery in the area, with an emphasis on Greek style desserts. They also have a full assortment of coffee and espresso, and tables inside to sit and enjoy your pastry. Would recommend if you're in the area.

A delightful spot to relax in the heart of NYC. Very nice background music as well. Today we had the Greek Style Stuffed Pepper and California Chicken with avocado, both were very tasty. And a good cup of house coffee.

This bakery is excellent. I ordered an assortment of chocolate cakes, which were amazing. There is quite a diverse range of options to choose from, and the trileches was excellent as well.

We ordered two small pastries, one with spinach and one with cheese, and a Caprese sandwich. Everything was very tasty, especially the spinach pastry, which I thought was the best. It was very pleasant to sit inside.

Moussaka is really good. Haven't tasted all the food but croissants are also amazing.
